Cameron LNG was developed from a regasification facility to provide global markets with direct access to liquid natural gas (LNG) supplies. Crews built three liquefaction trains to safely process and load LNG supplies onto ships on the deep-water Calcasieu ship channel. The liquefaction trains have a projected export of 1.7 billion cubic feet of LNG per day, with an annual revenue of $7 billion. Design, engineering, procurement, and construction of the facility created 11,000 on-site jobs through peak construction of the trains and demonstrated a $10 billion investment in the region.

As part of the project, the owners of the facility commissioned the construction of three massive natural gas reservoirs that would operate as storage tanks for LNG. To form the containers, Baker Concrete Construction turned to the expertise of PERI USA for formwork solutions allowing for simultaneous manufacturing of all three structures, diminution of the wall cross section, and consideration of reinforced shear walls.

Each of the containers features a 290-foot inner diameter and stands 140 feet tall. PERI USA’s solution incorporated the external inclination at the bottom third of the wall as well as the wall thickness offsets around the supports.

“Striking and moving worked easily and safely,” said Vernon Abney, foreman at Baker Concrete Construction. “It only took us 13 days for one concreting section with the PERI climbing formwork solutions, and thus we were able to adhere to our schedule.”

PERI delivered 468 pre-assembled, rounded-out VARIO panels and 80 climbing units for each reservoir, each supported by CB 240 climbing platforms. In two-week concrete cycle heights of 15 feet, the customized pre-assembled VARIO GT 24 girder wall formwork and CB climbing scaffold system were safely and smoothly moved by crane in the form of climbing units.

VARIO GT 24 can be adapted to suit all geometries and requirements with variable arrangements of formwork girders and walers and features continuous adjustment through elongated holes in walers and couplings with flush, aligned panel connections. VARIO panel widths and heights are flexible and determined by the length of girders and walers needed for the project specifications.

CB Climbing Formwork supports large, anchored wall formwork and consists of formwork, a working platform, brackets with formwork carriage, strongbacks, and finishing platform. The large scaffold units with high load capacity and the need for only one crane lift make CB Climbing Formwork efficient for the job site.
